Just came from a Sociology lecture on equality, gender discrimination, etc.
And just on a personal note, I realised that people keep looking at all these statistics, trying to have a perfect balance of 50-50 in each sector. We think we have made improvement only when we see equal stats, we see fewer gaps in percentages, etc. It is important to realise that there are always going to be some sectors which are dominated either of the sexes. This may not be due to lack of equal opportunities but simply because of our social and cultural constructs. So instead of trying to get perfect statistics, to achieve equality in every sector, we should instead aim for equal access. By this I mean giving people an equal access to an opportunity, so that if they choose do to something, they are not faced with any gender discrimination.
Thus ‘euality’ shouldn’t be about achieving equal and balanced stats, it should be about providing and having equal access to career paths, education, pay, etc.
